We live in a culture in which we are increasingly encouraged to solve all of our problems on our own, and where the tools for increasing our well-being seem endless, and can often be profoundly supportive. However, skilled psychotherapy can offer what individual practices cannot: the trained, empathic mind of another who can help us see and understand in relationship what it is not possible for us to see and understand alone. This process can be deeply rewarding, challenging, and life-altering. It is a commitment to our own growth that can transform our relationships with other people, with our work, and with our own minds and bodies. I work with people whose lives are in transition, who are struggling with finding meaning and joy in their lives, and who are navigating painful experiences of grief and isolation. The assumptions of this work are that no lasting change is possible without clearly seeing and understanding the nature of our pain, that this journey requires patience, courage, and honesty, and that it cannot be done alone. In Buddhism, it is said that acknowledging that we are suffering is the first requirement for uprooting that suffering. In psychotherapy, we address this human suffering in the most human of ways: through relationship. |
